What is Mindfulness? 

Mindfulness is the practice of actively choosing to pay attention to the present moment with openness, curiosity, and without judgement. It is a state of being that you can achieve through the practice of focusing your attention on the present moment. The more time invested in mindfulness, the more positive the effect will be.

How Does Mindfulness Work?  

According to a special health report published by Harvard Health "some experts believe that mindfulness works, in part by, helping people accept their experiences - including painful emotions - rather than react to them with aversion and avoidance". Practicing mindfulness gives you the opportunity to be fully present in the moment. It is natural for stressors or negative thoughts to come up, however by practicing mindfulness we can learn to accept them and re-focus our attention. 

Mindfulness meditation is a common practice combined with other types of therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, which are each aimed at helping people gain tools and skills to shift their mindset from negative thoughts to predominately positive thoughts.
